Toastmasters Meeting Review Tuesday 1 December 2009

Meeting date Tuesday 1 December 2009
In Bangsar Toastmasters tradition this was a quality meeting. While attendance was a little lower than usual, possibly due to the heavy rain, the meeting had all the components of a good meeting with interesting table topics, three prepared speeches and excellent detailed evaluations which had lessons for all.
President Lourdes opened the meeting and introduced the theme “self-sacrifice” . He invited everyone to say something about the theme, enabling members to provide their own, personal interpretations of the concept, while at the same time helping us all to get to know each other better as the short introductions were interspersed with personal anecdotes. The word of the day “altruistic” was introduced by Grammarian, Aisha, nicely complementing the theme.
The Table Topics session was challenging, to say the least. It developed the theme of self-sacrifice allowing speakers to talk about the value of sacrifice and the various ways the sacrifice of others touched their lives, as well as the importance of giving, and controversially why sometimes self-sacrifice might not always be the best answer – you have to have enough yourself, in order to be able to give.
The three assignment speeches illustrated the variety of skills required to become an Advanced Communicator, by providing opportunities for three very different types of speeches one from the Basic and two from Advanced Communicator Manuals. Renu’s speech “Your body speaks” was a light-hearted look at how your body language can tell the truth despite what you may be saying. It was well-illustrated by lively facial expression and examples from her work in a Spa, where clients’ facial expressions and powerful kicks gave away the pain they were experiencing, despite saying nothing. The importance of the position of the speaker, with the whole body in view of the audience, especially for this type of speech was explained in the evaluation. The second assignment speech gave us all an insight into Lucky’s career in Toastmasters – although I am not sure how much and exactly what was true! A formal speech, this is an advanced assignment in which you learn to speak on a specific occasion, in this case at an Anniversary celebration. It required the speaker to have good mastery of facts, an enthusiastic tone and an appropriate degree of formality, keeping the focus on the person being praised. Appropriate dress and controlled posture contributed to the effectiveness of the speech. The third assignment enabled Ranjani to tell us an Indian Folk Tale, one with a moral of course – “Beware of Mean Friends”. This assignment enables the speaker to develop a good memory, descriptive vocabulary and vocal variety, essential to maintain the audience’s interest. This was a thought-provoking tale which I am still thinking about.
The detailed evaluations of all the speeches as well as detailed reports from the Grammarian, Ah Counter and Time-keeper and a thorough meeting evaluation by the General Evaluator all provided food for thought.
Following the awards for best speakers and evaluator, control was passed back to the President. Lourdes announced that the club was in the process of confirming a change of location for our meetings. This will give us more space and a more comfortable environment for our fellowship and meetings. Watch this space for an announcement!
Overall this meeting allowed all to participate and to learn by doing as well as by listening! Don’t miss the next on on the 15th!

The theme of the meeting “Moving Forward” definitely reflected the beginning of the meeting. President Lourdes DTM started the meeting off by announcing the vacancy for the VPE’s post as our previous VPE Shanmugam CTM resigned due to work commitments. Lakmichand ATMB was elected to fill the post – a great choice, indeed!

The Invocation was done by our newly elected VPE who reflected on the changes one experiences as time goes by.

The TTM Rema Paul DTM spiced up the Table Topics session with her thought-provoking topics. Ranjit ATMB explained why “On a bad day, you are almost always never alone”. Dinesh TM asked us to “Remain calm, even when it seems hopeless”. Prem (guest) revealed his wild side in “Indulge in the things you truly love”. Not to be outdone, our other guest, Shoba, expressed her optimism in “Always try to see the glass half full”. Renu TM had us in stitches with her take on “Don’t be overly concerned with your weight, it’s only a number”. Huegesh TM, with his calm demeanor, went on with “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. There was no dearth (Word-of-the-day) of volunteers for the Table Topics session. Eileen CTM concluded the Table Topics session with her concise and crisp evaluation.

The second part of the meeting was no less exciting. There was a wide array of speeches, from an Icebreaker to an Advanced speech.

Joan-Lynn TM confidently delivered her maiden speech, “Joan wants to be heard”. Michelle CC evaluated her speech and pointed out some areas for improvement.

Ananthan TM inspired us with his 10th speech by urging us on with “You can do it”. Congrats on completing your CC, Ananthan. His evaluator, Sham Sunder CC, as always weaved his evaluation with humour, to not only inform but also to entertain us.

Ranjit ATMB was all business with his Public Relations speech, “Sell yourself”. He was ably evaluated by Lakhmichand ATMB.

The General Evaluator for the day, Maureen ACB, commented on the overall conduct of the meeting and offered some suggestions for improvement.

Our guest, Prem, was voted as the Best Table Topics speaker. The Best Speaker Award went to Ranjit ATMS and Best Evaluator was Lakhmichand ATMB.

Rema Paul DTM urged us on by displaying the beautiful plaque she received from Toastmasters International for achieving her Distinguished Toastmasters status. Congrats, Rema!

A great ending to a cool, rainy, wonderful evening.

Toastmasters International 85th Anniversary

A word from the International President

October 22, 2009

Fellow Toastmasters,

Happy Anniversary!

October 22 is an auspicious date for Toastmasters around the world. It marks the day that a small group of people, led by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, held the first official Toastmasters meeting in the basement of a YMCA in Santa Ana, California, USA.

While the original intent of the group was to teach after-dinner speeches to young men, as we all know, Toastmasters has evolved to become a worldwide leader in communication and leadership development. This evolution was no accident; Dr. Smedley firmly believed that the improvement of a person's ability to communicate his or her ideas was a means of improving life in all its phases, personal as well as professional. It's a philosophy that resonates as clearly today as it did back in 1924.

Since its founding, Toastmasters International has empowered more than 4 million people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Our organization's long-term success and growth is a tribute to Dr. Smedley's vision. He understood that communication isn't optional and leadership isn't always natural, but both can be learned through doing.

As we celebrate our 85th anniversary, the organization stands at a historic high point. Our membership is at an all-time high of 252,000 and growing, our programs are more expansive and our leaders have developed innovative strategies to keep up with advances and shifting cultural dynamics of the global age.

The next 85 years hold even greater promise as we continue to adapt and evolve in an ever-changing world. Let us work together to build our organization by building our members -- with confidence, leadership and service.

Thank you for all you do to support and serve Toastmasters.

Sincerely,

Gary Schmidt
International President
